Heritage Trails in the Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Desertmartin Heritage Trail

Nestled at the foot of Slieve Gallion, Desertmartin is the gateway to the picturesque Sperrin Mountains and spans the townlands of Stranagard and Knocknagin in the Barony of Loughinsholin. The area was once home to a number of very successful mills and also boasted a bustling flax and linen industry. Farming was another mainstay in Desertmartin with a cooperative creamery and eggery set up to help local farmers and their families boost their income.

Although there is not much left of former buildings such as the railway station or the gaol, it is worth stopping to dander around this quiet village, learn about its history from the information panels and imagine its busy past. The Grange Water River gently flows through the village and past the old graveyard.

This is a short self guided short walk around the historic settlement of Desertmartin.
